Our primary location at Hinchinbrook ensures all jobs remain within a reasonable driving distance. Gregory Hills is a new, master planned suburb on the outskirts of South West Sydney (built during the last 10-15 years) with an extremely rigid design code.
Therefore, each property at Gregory Hills was constructed in recent years. As such, it is relatively rare for us to encounter properties with existing gardens. Most clients receive bare yards and basic perimeter fencing upon handover by the builder. They also receive a Colorbond letterbox. We then construct the remainder of the landscape from the start.
The majority of our clients based at Gregory Hills are either new-home buyers or upgrading their current homes. They have similar desires for a contemporary, modern yard that matches the look and feel of their new home. Most common items requested include side-yard returns; very-low maintenance front yard that meets local council design requirements; and complete backyards including porcelain pavers, artificial turf, and a fully covered alfresco. All aspects of the project are handled internally, including the development of concepts through to completion (design, estate-compliant documentation, materials sourcing, installation and post-installation maintenance). Landscaping in Gregory Hills — Local Conditions to Plan For
Gregory Hills (postcode 2557) is part of the Camden Local Government Area and represents another relatively recent development in the South West Growth Corridor. Block sizes as part of this type of estate planning can vary; however, they tend to range between 250-450 sqm, have narrower frontages but typically longer rear yard areas. As Gregory Hills was built out over the last decade, nearly all properties were newly constructed, so there is little, if any, pre-existing landscaping to consider when designing your outdoor space. While being able to present a ‘blank canvas’ is beneficial to provide you with flexibility in terms of how you choose to design your property, it comes at a cost. Most blocks will be subject to estate covenant restrictions, which include selecting plants based on approved species for the front yard area, style of fencing to use, material used for driveways and visual treatment of side returns.
Due to soil quality (heavy clay/construction fill), suitable drainage systems need to be established prior to installing any form of turf or planting in order to ensure optimal health of both the grass and plants. The overall topography of the area is generally flat with gentle slopes in some areas. Gregory Hills is exposed to strong west winds during the summer months and direct sunlight in the afternoons, similar to other areas of the South West Growth Corridor. Narrower lot widths throughout Gregory Hills also cause side-of-house issues. Typically, there is very little room (usually less than 2 meters) between the back of the house and the fence line. Therefore, each area needs to be carefully considered and designed to accommodate storage, drainage and access.
Full new-build landscape package designs are the most common requests for us related to Gregory Hills. In addition, many homeowners require help with designs for their narrow side-return areas. Front yards need to comply with estate requirements, and many homeowners contact us to assist them with building an up-to-date backyard using products such as porcelain pavers, artificial turf and covering a portion of their alfresco zone.
